Fresh figs are usually available in the fall. You can find them in the produce section with the exotic fruits like dates and coconuts. Try one raw to get the flavor–they’re not as sweet as dried figs, and you may fall in love with them for autumn cooking. Paired with more familiar dates, this shake is an easy and delicious option for giving this less familiar fruit a fair chance.

- 4 fresh ripe figs (about 4 oz.)
- 2 moist, plump Medjool dates (about 1 1/2 oz.)
- 1/2 c. freshly squeezed orange juice
- 4 ice cubes
- A few fig slices for the glass
Place all of the ingredients except the sliced fig in the blender. Blend until frothy, about one minute. Pour into a glass, garnish with fig slices, and serve at once.
