The Academy’s Health-Minded Culinary Staff Will Team Up with Guiding Stars to Help Students Make More Informed Choices About Nutrition
CONCORD, NH (October 29, 2013)— Brewster Academy, an independent, college preparatory day and boarding school in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, is teaming up with Guiding Stars, the nation’s leading nutrition guidance program, to educate students about healthy eating options and nutrition. The program, which will be implemented in Brewster Academy’s dining hall, is designed to help students make nutritious choices and garner the knowledge needed to make informed choices for years to come.
The Guiding Stars nutrition guidance system will compliment the careful attention and delicious, healthy ingredients that already go into daily menu planning at Brewster. The program is being implemented to help students retain valuable information about healthy eating and nutrition so they continue to make nutritious food-buying and eating decisions in college and beyond.
“I am very excited about Guiding Stars,” said Brewster’s Executive Chef Chris Dill. “Over the past three years I have struggled with finding a way of getting the students involved with nutrition. I encourage them to try different grains, whole wheat pastas, brown rice, and even started a student dining committee in hopes of engaging more students on the subject of nutrition.”
He continued, “Guiding Stars helps my staff and I reach out to all students without having to spend a lot of time with small groups. They are now constantly reminded that nutrition matters, and eating properly will have huge benefits in whatever life choices they seek out.”
The Guiding Stars program will enhance Brewster Academy’s existing dining experience for students by taking the guesswork out of deciding which items on the menu offer a better nutritional value. For students who are unfamiliar with which foods offer the most nutritional bang for their buck, the program will offer simple star ratings. Foods will be labeled according to their value: one Guiding Star is good, two Guiding Stars is better and three Guiding Stars is best. All items are evaluated using a patented algorithm based on the USDA Dietary Guidelines for Americans and other national evidence-based nutrition policies.
“By teaming up with the creative, health-minded culinary team at Brewster Academy, we can show students how healthy, nutrient-rich foods can taste good too,” said Sue Till, client services manager with Guiding Stars. “We’re working together to instill good habits in these students that can have a major positive impact on their lives for years to come.”
