Our story starts in 1936 when N.M. Cohen and Samuel Lehrman founded Giant Food Inc. and opened Washington, DC’s first supermarket. Since then, we’ve continued to grow and innovate, pioneering computer-assisted checkout scanning and opening over 150 stores throughout Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia.

Hannaford Supermarkets, is based in Scarborough, Maine and operates in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont. The stores offer good prices, value, and top-quality fresh foods supported by daily deliveries and friendly, efficient service. Hannaford developed the Guiding Stars System in 2006 with the help of a scientific advisory panel.
