Guiding Stars Looks to Raise Awareness For Food Education and Healthy Food Choices, Expert Chef Erin Dow Among Local Portland Participants

PORTLAND, Maine, (May 15, 2012)—Guiding Stars, the first store-wide nutrition guidance program for rating food, today announced its participation in Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution Day through its Expert Chef Erin Dow.  Dow is among the official participants in this first-ever worldwide day of actions focused on highlighting locally sourced, fresh food and the need for better food education.

Guiding Stars’ Dow will join community members—including personal trainers Lee’ann Wells and Nichole Weaver, Yoga Instructor Rebecca Lawind, and Kristie Greene of Maple’s Organic Ice Cream—to host a day of activities geared towards educating the public about healthy eating choices and local food options. The event will take place at the Westbrook Community Center, located at 426 Bridge St, Westbrook, ME, from 10:00am to 2:00pm EST, Saturday, May 19, 2012,

Portland area residents are encouraged to join Guiding Stars in its efforts to instill principles of food education and get children excited about making healthy eating choices. Expert Chef Erin Dow will be hosting a ‘Make-Your-Own Trail Mix’ bar featuring a variety of healthy ingredients for children to mix and match. She will be there to answer questions about healthy recipes for children and give away an assortment of takeaways and recipe cards.

“Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution Day gives us the opportunity to bring practical lessons in healthy food choices to our local community,” said Guiding Stars Expert Chef Erin Dow.  “As a mother of three, I understand how much education makes a difference in any lesson we try to teach, including the important lessons in making healthy food choices. Through Food Revolution Day, we can work together to empower children to begin to make more educated choices on what foods they choose to eat.”

Obesity rates have more than doubled since 1980. Every year, more than 5 million people die from obesity or diet-related diseases. World-renowned TV personality and chef Jamie Oliver created Food Revolution Day to spark conversations about real food and inspire people to take steps towards a healthier lifestyle.

Dow said, “We want to play a role in getting children excited about healthy foods, and we know it starts by teaching kids, in our own community, about nutrition and exercise.”
