Frosting is an easy menu item to remove to cut back on the sugar impact from dessert, but let’s face it: sometimes you just want frosting. On a cupcake or on a spoon, it’s a pleasure. This nutritious variation on chocolate frosting can be tweaked with spices like cinnamon or nutmeg to fit whatever you’re frosting.

Ingredients

  • ¾ cup dates, pitted
  • ¼ cup hot water
  • 2 ripe avocados
  • ¼ cup cocoa powder
  • ¼ tsp. vanilla
  • ⅛ tsp. salt
  • Unsweetened almond milk (optional)

Directions

  1. Combine dates and hot water. Let sit for 5 minutes, then puree in a food processor to achieve a paste.
  2. Pit avocados and remove flesh from skin. Place in food processor with date paste.
  3. Add cocoa, vanilla and salt to food processor and puree. If the frosting is too thick, it can be thinned with a drizzle of unsweetened almond milk.
