Shopping List Shake Up

Let’s be honest. Grocery shopping is a task most of us trying to just get through. In that effort, our grocery list is nearly predetermined, except for the few items that may be necessary for that week’s menu. However, that means our shopping cart (and subsequently our kitchen) often has the same foods in it week after week. In that case, it may be time to increase the variety, and the nutritional benefit, of the foods we acquire via a shopping list shake up.

In the Produce Section

It’s common to put the same fruits and veggies in your cart each week, knowing you’re picking the options that work best for your household. However, the produce section has an increasing number of root vegetables, hybrid options, greens, mushroom varieties that you should explore. These nutritious foods are rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants (not to mention they earn Guiding Stars!). Why not roast purple potatoes tonight, or bake okra bites to complement your meal? Simple swaps in the produce department may mean new flavors, and textures. Along with more color on your plate, it will inspire you to consume more fruits and veggies.

Switch Out the Grain

If your house is like mine, you have go-to dishes that get you through super scheduled days and busy weeks. While it may be difficult to introduce a new dish when you’re crunched for time, you can simply switch up a dish your family already loves. In my opinion, your go-to recipes are the easiest to experiment with. Pass on traditional pasta and try a bean-based substitute, rice alternative, or quinoa. These options turn a simple side into a dish with added fiber and plant-based protein.
