Garden Planning

Spring is here, technically, and while many of us have been slowed in our gardening endeavors because of the extreme cold and excessive snow, it’s not too early to start planning what you’re going to plant. As always, Mother Earth News is full of great ideas for getting your garden growing. Here are a few ideas we like from their extensive tips list.

Extend the Growing Season

Could there be a better year to try out row covers, DIY greenhouses or starting seeds inside? Plastic lettuce containers make great mini-greenhouses for starting seeds inside if you’re looking for a small, kid-friendly project to jumpstart your garden.

Don’t Forget the Herbs

Growing your own herbs is a great way to reduce the cost of using fresh herbs while giving yourself a wide range of flavors to season your food healthfully. Why not pick something new to try, like tarragon or lovage?

Research Your Varietals

Is that lettuce cut-and-come-again? Did you choose perennials strawberries? Is that heirloom tomato high-yield? Research your seeds to make sure you’re choosing the right varieties for your needs and to make sure you get the most out of your plans.
